OptiFlume vs Cursor Auto
Both pick a model for you. The difference is where the decision is made, whether you can see and overrule it, and who it saves money for.
| OptiFlume | Cursor Auto | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the choice is made | On your Mac, from the code you are working on | In Cursor's cloud |
| What it looks at | Your prompt, the code it touches in your repository, and how the session is going | The request: Cursor describes routing by its task type and complexity |
| Adapts to you | Yes (Pro): learns from the prompts you overrule | No per-user tuning documented |
| Which model ran | Shown in the model picker, with a note saying why | Never with a reason; on Teams and Enterprise plans, hidden by default |
| Overrule a single prompt | Yes: keep your own model for any prompt | Not within Auto: you can't hand-pick the model for a request |
| How you pay | Your normal Cursor plan; OptiFlume Pro is $6.99 a month | Each request at the list price of the model it was routed to |
| Who can use it | Individuals and teams | Individuals and teams on most Cursor plans; the newer Balance and Intelligence modes are Teams and Enterprise only, for now |
| Your code | Never sent anywhere by OptiFlume | Sent to Cursor, as with any Cursor request |

When Cursor Auto is enough
If you don't need to know why a model was picked, don't want to overrule it on a single prompt, and are happy to pay each model's list price, Auto is built in and needs nothing installed.
When OptiFlume fits better
If you want a router that knows your codebase and learns your style, not one that judges each request on its own, or you want to see every switch, keep the last word on any prompt, or keep the decision on your own machine, OptiFlume works inside the Cursor you already use and only switches between the models you have turned on. The same license covers Claude Code and Codex too.
Can I use both?
Yes, but not on the same prompt: when Auto is selected, Cursor picks the model. OptiFlume works when you have a specific model selected.
